Ariel Photography

My daughter has this huge Disney Princess magazine/bible from Japan, and inside it there’s a ton of useful information. On one page they show how to make an Ariel-themed bento-box lunch for your little munchkin. So, I decided to make a poor-man’s version of it one day and this was the result.

My daughter was impressed. Mostly because she’s only 3. And also, she’s never seen Pippy Longstocking so she couldn’t ridicule me for the resemblance.

Mock me or congratulate me, I leave it up to you.

But if you want to see what some really crazy people do, search for “character bento,” or check out this contest winner.

I’ve been dragon my feet

•November 16, 2007 • 3 Comments

I was doing so good at posting fairly often, and now look what happened. Well, I’ve been spending most non-housework non-childcare time on the job search, so I haven’t posted in a while. Here’s a dragon, though. Dragons are pretty cool. I think his name is Tim. Or maybe Oliver.

dressed for school

Lately I’ve been getting my daughter ready for daycare in the morning more often than usual. It might just be my imagination, but it seems there is a slight difference in her appearance when I get her ready compared to when mom gets her ready. See if you can guess which version for which I’m responsible.

Facial Profiling

•November 1, 2007 • 1 Comment

I was trying recently to break out of the Comic Book Hero Facial Syndrome (CBHFS), characterized by square jaws and prominent cheekbones, so I tried a new technique of drawing random squiggly lines and forcing myself to use those lines as the profile of a head. It definitely added a caricature-ish feel to the drawings, and turned out much more interesting than I expected.

Halloween

A slightly Halloween-ish drawing.  It’s kind of like Nosferatu, but more like his cousin from Southern Romania.

weird and blobby

These are all inspired by former co-workers. I mean they inspired me to draw them.  They don’t resemble these creatures…much.

Speedy things!

Here’s some pen sketches. I do a lot of abstract objects just playing with shapes and lines. The only thing I was aiming for with these was making it seem like they’re speeding along.

Trees!

Here are some trees I’ve drawn. Actually, all are 2-3 years old, so I’ll try to update with more recent work.

The power of language

•October 25, 2007 • 1 Comment

You truly realize the power of language when your children start using new words. My 3 year-old daughter has started to say “eventually” before her sentences. Her latest use was when she said, “Dad, eventually I’m going to have to get more shoes.” Up until now, her best argument for diversifying her footwear collection has been screaming “I WANT THESE!” which has actually been effective 14% of the time. But when she said “eventually,” I found myself seriously thinking, “Hmmm, she might be right.” One hour and six pairs of shoes later, I came to my senses. It left me in amazement, though, at the influence that a single word can have.
